Hampshire College Farm is a 40 acre mixed vegetable and livestock operation. In addition to 6 acres of mixed vegetable production, Hampshire College Farm raises a herd of 8-12 beef cattle, 6-8 hogs in a farrow-to-finish breeding operation, a flock of ~50 laying hens and have recently revamped our lambing program with 3 ewes, raising between 3-9 lambs each year. The farm provides vegetables and meat for our on campus dining services and also runs a small 120 member vegetable CSA and a smaller meat CSA each year. The farm also retails meat and eggs through the CSA program. The Farm is run by a staff of 3 - Emily Landeck, Charlotte Senders and Joe Cecchi - and employs over 30 students each year in various roles to support the operations.
In this visit we will discuss warm season grazing and more specifically focus on pasture renovation. We are working on a big pasture renovation project this summer and have done some other types of renovations in the past two years. We will see the pasture in the midst of full reseeding to warm season grasses, as well as the pasture that is 2 years post no-till seeding renovation. We will address methods, success stories, difficulties, and the reasoning behind the various renovations.
